Lorem ipsum generator
Generate placeholder text by words, sentences, or paragraphs. Useful for mockups, layouts, and design comps that need filler before real copy is ready.
What this tool does
The lorem ipsum generator produces placeholder text of an arbitrary length in the classic dummy-Latin style used in design mockups for centuries. Choose how much you want (words, sentences, or paragraphs), click generate, and copy the result.
Why "Lorem ipsum"?
The text is a scrambled excerpt from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a treatise on ethics written by the Roman philosopher Cicero in 45 BC. It was reportedly first used as filler text by an unknown 16th-century printer who took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. The opening words "Lorem ipsum" come from "dolorem ipsum" with the first two letters removed.
Designers use it because the shape, length, and rhythm of the Latin words approximate English without being distracting. Real text would tempt readers to focus on the meaning; lorem ipsum lets them focus on the layout.
How to use the output
Drop the generated text into mockups, prototypes, or content placeholders. It works well in any context where the actual copy isn't yet written but you need to see what the page will look like at the intended length.
One caveat: replace lorem ipsum with real copy before launching anything to a wider audience. There are well-documented cases of placeholder text reaching production — including printed books, restaurant menus, and at least one US presidential campaign website — because nobody removed it.
When NOT to use it
For user-experience research, real or realistic copy is much more informative than Latin filler. UX studies consistently show that participants make different decisions when they can read the words on a button or in a paragraph; lorem ipsum hides that signal.
For accessibility testing, lorem ipsum also distorts results — screen readers will pronounce the Latin, and the lack of meaningful structure makes it hard to evaluate heading hierarchy.
Alternatives
If lorem ipsum feels too old-fashioned, designers sometimes use:
- Bacon ipsum — variants made of food words ("Bacon ipsum dolor amet…").
- Hipster ipsum — modern English nouns ("artisan craft beer locavore…").
- Real-world content — a Wikipedia article in the project's domain. This is the most honest option for design reviews.
